Standards

Editorial standards

We would rather say less and be right. Every guide and tool on Jury Duty Help follows these rules.

Sources we use

Our primary sources are the U.S. Courts (uscourts.gov), the text of Title 28 of the U.S. Code (Jury Selection and Service Act) via Cornell’s Legal Information Institute, and each state judiciary’s official jury pages. We only state a state-specific rule when we have checked it against an official source, and otherwise we point you to the state page.

We cite the primary source whenever one exists: the statute, the agency page, the court rule, or the extension publication. News articles and industry groups are used only for context and are labeled as such. Each guide lists its sources at the bottom with links.

What we will not do

Tools and data

The letter builders produce plain, polite templates. They don’t guarantee any outcome, because courts decide requests at their discretion. The pay calculator uses the federal rates in 28 U.S.C. § 1871 and lets you enter your state’s rate yourself, since state rates and rules vary.

Review and updates

Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed. We re-check sources when we learn a rule has changed and at least once a year. When a change matters to readers, we note it on the page.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, use the contact form and include the page and a source. Confirmed errors are fixed promptly, and substantive corrections are noted on the page with the date.

Limits

Jury Duty Help is an independent information site. We are not a court, a government agency, or a law firm, and we cannot excuse, postpone, or register you for jury service. Only the court that summoned you can do that. Rules differ between federal courts and each state, and between counties. Always follow the instructions on your summons, and contact the court with questions. This is general information, not legal advice.
